《Dear Adult》

《Dear Adult》

Dear Adult – Album Visual Design for The Wanted Vocal Band

This project presents the visual identity for Dear Adult, the debut album released in 2020 by The Wanted Vocal Band, a work that later received critical acclaim at the Golden Melody Awards. The album marks a significant milestone for the group, both musically and conceptually.

The main visual, created by the designer, unfolds a personal narrative of “growth and inner struggle” through an abstract visual language. Rather than offering a fixed interpretation, the work intentionally leaves space for each viewer to form their own emotional connection.

At the time of creation, the designer was navigating a period of emotional turbulence and self-doubt. Early drafts of the artwork failed to resonate with her, until she began to treat the design process as a form of self-healing.

Listening repeatedly to the songs from Dear Adult, she translated her emotional landscape into imagery. Through this act of making, the inner noise began to quiet—gently cleansed by the music itself. The final visual became her way of responding to the album: a hope that viewers might experience a similar reflection, blending the music with their own life stories to discover a lingering, personal resonance.

In the composition, the Statue of Liberty draped in a “SALES” tag represents the illusion of value under capitalism. The diving figures depict those who willingly submit to the universal race for success and validation, while the flickering lights of windows at night symbolize the loneliness and disconnection hidden beneath everyday noise and activity.

The figures' skin is covered in distorted textures, representing the exhaustion experienced by a generation drained by societal demands during the day and unable to place or process their sadness by night. Two characters sit silently by the windows, embodying the quiet realization of invisible chains and the helplessness of not knowing how to break free—a shared feeling across a restless generation.

Dear Adult does not aim to offer answers. Instead, it invites each of us to pause, and to reexamine what it means to grow up. It reflects a lifelong negotiation with the self—and the quiet, persistent courage to continue forward.

For the designer, this project was more than the completion of a visual piece. It became a space between life and creation, where breath could return and clarity emerge.

We are all still on the way. And perhaps, just ahead, a path that belongs to you is beginning to take shape.

About the Visual|From the Creator

This visual was created as an abstract narration of my own story—
but how the story is told, and what it means, is ultimately up to each viewer.

“Growing up isn’t just about physical change, but about the ongoing inner struggle—
a repeated protest against the older versions of ourselves.”

When I first took on this project, I was going through a period of deep emotional unrest.
Trapped in a whirlpool of self-doubt, I delivered a series of drafts that even I couldn’t feel satisfied with.

It wasn’t until I saw this creative process as a journey of self-healing—listening to The Wanted Vocal Band’s music as I transformed those feelings into images—
that the noise inside me began to quiet down. The music gently purified my inner chaos.
Just as the album soothed me, I hope the visuals I created, when paired with the music,
can offer viewers a layered taste that resonates with their own life experiences—
a quiet, lingering aftertaste of something personal.

In this world, our happiness has been capitalized, our sorrows mass-produced.
The Statue of Liberty bearing the word “SALES” at the bottom of the composition symbolizes how money and fame have become our modern-day holy grail.
Many people—including a former version of myself—have been led to believe that happiness must be built upon such values, as though this were life’s only possible foundation.

Those bound by society’s harsh gaze often justify the invisible chains they wear.
The diving figures in the artwork represent those who blindly leap into this universal value system, willingly treating themselves as products—placed on the marketplace of the internet, waiting to be swiped left, swiped right, accepted or rejected.

At night, when some lights are on and others are off, amid the fading echoes of social noise and stimulation, an emptiness rises. It makes me wonder—do others also feel, as I do,
that a quiet toxin called “melancholy” is spreading within them?

Maybe everyone carries a quiet, heavy sorrow resting on their chest. The distorted textures covering each figure’s skin reflect how this generation is consumed by society during the day, yet unable to place their grief at night.

The two melancholic figures by the windows on either side of the frame represent those of us who have begun to recognize the invisible chains we carry—but still haven’t found a way to break free. They sit in quiet contemplation, trying to find a place for the sorrow that cannot be contained. There is no universal formula for what success should look like. The meaning of life may not lie in finding the answer at all—but in experiencing the journey itself.

Each of us is wrestling with different parts of ourselves in different ways.None of us has reached the end of the road just yet.

Dear Adult gave me not only a creative opportunity, but also the courage to take a leap in my life. It reminded me that somewhere, somehow, there is always a way forward—
and that in our own ways, we’ll find one another as we each move toward the next chapter we long for.
